Dallas environmental news website tells story of organization working to help local residents.
In a post on July 17, 2020, Dallas-area based website Green Source DFW shared the story on the work of the Texas Poor People’s Campaign in Waxahachie and how a community garden is the symbol of their effort to bring hope to those in need.
The organization, which intends to revive the work of Dr. Martin Luther King’s Poor People’s March by representing the needs of the disenfranchised and impoverished, has begun to hold events in Waxahachie to meet the challenges of Ellis County as it faces a 20-year record high unemployment rate.
At the center of the organization’s three-day Tent City event held in mid-June was a sprucing up of the community garden in Waxahachie’s Freedman’s Plaza on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. Organizers distributed food aid, planted vegetables in the garden and taught lessons on how to compost.
