{"id":6313,"date":"2020-10-14T06:46:50","date_gmt":"2020-10-14T11:46:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/waxahachie360.com\/?p=6313"},"modified":"2021-04-08T12:15:42","modified_gmt":"2021-04-08T12:15:42","slug":"waxahachie-isd-seeks-substitute-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/waxahachie360.com\/waxahachie-news\/2020\/10\/14\/waxahachie-isd-seeks-substitute-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"Waxahachie ISD seeks substitute teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">School district faces shortage of subs <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">For a job that requires some college under your belt, the pay is atrocious and there are no benefits to speak of, but becoming a substitute teacher for Waxahachie I.S.D. may be just the kind of rewarding career move you&#8217;re looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Late Tuesday afternoon, the district announced through social media that it has openings for an indefinite number of substitute teachers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WaxahachieISD\/posts\/3281857338528862\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WaxahachieISD\/posts\/3281857338528862<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The qualifications to be a sub are easy to meet, and the pay is perhaps best described as being devised to attract applicants who are not in it for the money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The requirements:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To become a substitute teacher, applicants must have completed at least 15 hours of college coursework and pass a background check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Texas law requires all subs to have a fingerprint on file, and applicants are on the hook for that expense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The pay:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pay for being a sub is broken down by whether you&#8217;re a certified teacher or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Certified teachers<\/strong> are paid $85 per day for assignments of 1 &#8211; 9 days, or roughly $10.63 per hour. For assignments that last 10 days or more, that pay rises to $150 per day, which is a far more living-wage of $18.75 per hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Non-certified subs<\/strong> are paid $70 per day, which is a mere $8.75 per hour for assignments of 1 &#8211; 9 days, and $95 per day, or $11.75 per hour,  for assignments of 10 or more days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Steps to become a sub<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To become a substitute teacher for WISD:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/waxahachie.tedk12.com\/hire\/ApplicantProfileLogin.aspx?JobID=2330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apply online at this link.<\/a><\/li><li>Wait for an email confirming that you should fill out additional paperwork.<\/li><li>Sign up for a new hire instructional session.<\/li><li>Get fingerprinted.<\/li><li>Complete a Safe Schools online training session.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;ll also need to get your college transcripts in the process of being sent. Certified teachers will need to have a copy of the proof of certification, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As to how many subs are needed, W.I.S.D. spokesperson Jenny Bridges says the district doesn&#8217;t have a set number in mind but is simply needing to add more subs to the rotation of those who can be called on, sometimes at a moment&#8217;s notice.
