Sims Library is hosting a photo contest for teens and adults.
If you’ve got talent for taking photos, you’ll want to enter to win the Sims Library Adult and Teen photo contest.
Water and lighting are the two broad categories of photos to be submitted. The contest is being broken down into two age groups: teens 13-18 years old and adults 18 years old and older. Participants may submit one photo in each category now through the contest deadline: August 31, 2020.
Youth Services Librarian Jennifer Graf says submissions in the water category may be photos of a body of water, rain on a window, a sink — anything that pertains to water. Lighting shots will be judged by the creativity of lighting in the photo and how it affects the image overall, such as in silhouettes.
Images may be captured with any camera from a simple mobile phone camera to a professional DSLR, Graf says. Scanned prints may also be submitted.
Four $50 Amazon gift cards are up for grabs for a total winning of $100 in each age group. There may be a total of four winners, but a participant can potentially take home both the water and lighting prize in an age group.
Images will be judged by library staff. The shots of all participants will be featured in an online gallery after the contest, giving everyone who enters a little recognition.
Graf says the contest is part of the library’s mission to bring information and entertainment to the community, especially as the global pandemic has shut down most local events and activities in recent months.
“This will probably be a monthly or bi monthly contest going forward since virtual is the only program we can do right now. So just something for people to look out for coming up in the future months as well,” Graf says. “This is our first time doing a photo contest; usually all our stuff is writing or poetry or something like that. So this is a little different for us. It’s just a way to engage our patrons, help them learn a new skill, and maybe try something new.”
