Community performance group brings semblance of normality to 2020 Christmas season
Hoping to bring a little holiday cheer to audiences this Christmas season, Waxahachie Community Theatre is performing the family-friendly comedy, Not a Creature Was Stirring, Not even a Moose.
Taking place solely in a newspaper office, the Pat Cook play follows the change of heart of editor J. J. Garnes as he intends to expose the corruption of his city’s officials but discovers the true meaning of Christmas, prompted by the letter of a young boy who’s given up on holidays.
WCT Executive Director Kasi Jones says the comedy is in the vein of Frank Kapra’s It’s a Wonderful Life, and the nine-member performance offers a chance for families to enjoy a semblance of normality during this Christmas holiday season.
“This is an opportunity for people to actually see live theatre and know that all hope is not lost — but there’s always hope when we work together for a common cause,” Kasi says. “Everything we do is family friendly. So, it’s a great evening or afternoon out for the whole family.”
Kasi says measures will be in place during the performance to mitigate infection risks. Audience members must wear a face mask to and from their seats, and seating is limited to enable social distancing. Also, everyone’s temperature will be taken at the door.
Waxahachie Community Theatre has operated for more than four decades, bringing performances to the city and a chance for actors to sharpen their performance skills.
“Our mission statement is to present premier, family-friendly theatrical activities and productions, to educate, enrich and entertain,” Kasi says.
Kasi says she hopes families will discover a new holiday tradition in WCT’s annual Christmas production, and that the current light-hearted performance has a message that’s especially appropriate during the 2020 holiday season.
“[What we hope to share is] that the magic of Christmas is not limited to children. Everybody can feel that magic and hope of the Christmas season,” Kasi says.
