New league to offer chance for recreation and meeting new people.
Because there’s plenty for children to do locally but very little for adults, Andrew Sanchez of Waxahachie is forming an all-adult, coed sand volleyball league.
Sign-ups are underway now through the end of June at the league’s Facebook group page. Adults 18 years-old and older who’d like to join the recreational league are welcome, regardless of physical fitness.
Andrew says the aim of the league is to simply create an option for local residents to get outside and enjoy physical activity and add to a few other available activities in the area.
“It’s just to give more options to adults to go and play and be healthy,” Andrew says. “I know the city does softball for adults, and the YMCA started a YMCA indoor league, coed, too. So, we’re just trying to give the outdoor option of the sand and hopefully grow that and see what it can become.”
The teams of six players will compete for five weeks total, which breaks down to three weeks of double-headers, a fourth week of a single game, and a final fifth week of a single elimination tournament, Andrew says.
The cost for each team is $300 for the season. The season begin on July 7, 2021.
Andrew says that if the response is great enough, the league may branch out and have both recreational teams and competitive teams. Although some players who sign up will be experienced players, Andrew says all skill levels and ages are welcome to join in.
“I’m 46. And the majority of my friends, they’re the ones trying to get teams together, and they’re gonna be like in their 30s and 40s. It’s gonna be first come first serve for the first eight teams. If I can run ten to twelve teams, I’ll do that,” he says. “We’ve got a good response, and teams are signing up right now. We’re looking at hopefully continuing it through the fall.”
