“Difficult time” claims small southside grocery store

H&H Grocery to call it quits this month

The small grocery store that butted right up against the street on the south side of the viaduct and went by the name Huskins, Chambers and more recently, H&H Grocery will be no more after this month.

In a Facebook post on August 15, 2020, the message of the store’s closing read simply:

“I would like too thank all our Loyal customers that helped keep us going during this difficult time. Sad too say but on August 27 H & H grocery will be closing it’s doors, again thanks too all!! We will be selling everything, will have a big garage Thursday Friday and Saturday , 27, 28 and 29, all must go.”

The notice mentions a difficult time that led to the store’s closing. The street in front of the store has been under construction and a challenge to navigate for months as the city builds a new bridge that will replace the old viaduct. The pandemic that has kept many residents, especially seniors, at home has only added insult to injury for the small store.

For more than 50 years, the small grocery store at 602 South Rogers served as a resource for grabbing a quick loaf of bread, a copy of the newspaper or a fresh donut for those who lived south of town.

In the tightly packed 864 square feet of retail space, the store also operated a deli that served sandwiches, soups and other comfort foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner, attracting a following IRL that was reflected in its more than 1,000 Facebook followers and its glowing Facebook reviews:

Matt McClain offered up the review: “Best place to get sandwiches! The chicken salad and pimento cheese are greatness. Deviled eggs cannot be passed up either.”

Sylvia Truehitt agrees: “best sandwiches anywhere! just like mom used to make!”

Likewise, Michael Burchfield says: “Great fresh foods!! Love the hometown /country store atmosphere and attitude. Their chef salad is INCREDIBLE.”

The location is up for sale with a contract pending on the property valued at $150,000. Soon, loyal customers of the grocery store will find out if the new owners will keep the store going or level it to make room for something new.

Note: This story was updated to include mention of the construction on South Rogers that may have adversely affected the store.

  1. I’m gone really going to miss this store especially the summer sausages and the moon cheese and hog head cheese…their foods be always fresh and good. When i want some summer sausages and cheeses i come to Waxahachie to this store and buy my meats or whatever their salads are so fresh and good…Man im gone miss this store. My home town is Waxahachie and i know all about this store. I be in their to buy my last summer sausages and cheese before they CLOSED THE DOORS!!!

  2. I use to live down the street from them and rode my bike to buy various items. So sad to see them closing shop 🙁

  3. This little store has been a part of my family for many years. My mom,Doris Duke, worked there for many years for the His mind. It is one of the last landmarks in Waxahachie. It’s sad to see this piece of history go.

  4. This is why I fucking despise commercialization. I’ve lived in Waxahachie for a long, long time and I’ve seen it gradually transform into something nobody really wants. Within twenty years it’ll be just another neighborhood in DFW. Fuck the city for causing this fuck the corporate whores who enabled it.
